(11m) Prince Harry and Meghan Markle versus the tabloids

Image
What was to be expected that may happen one day: a war against the tabloids by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle . Indeed, Prince Harry never forgot how the media was responsible for the dead of his mother and thus now he wants to protect his wife and child against the gossip media, certainly because part of the media is considered as hostile towards his dark-skinned wife who decided to have a break away from the media during her pregnancy as is her right to do. He's not the only person who is fed up with the intrusion of privacy by part of the media , a media that has been warned since years they are overstepping lines. And thus, as phone hacking is illegal without a court order, I think they should be able to win that part if they can proof part of the media hacked them. Of course, it will not make them popular with the media. However, after reading this article whereby I understand her father went to the media with the letter she wrote, it seems to suggest the real ...

(11l) Rules to prevent that elections are influenced by unknows

Nick Clegg, criticised by the EU because, as an senior employee of Facebook (FB), he helped FB to create rules to prevent foreign interference in (EU) elections . The rule: companies that want to run advertisements (in short: ads) on FB (to influence elections) in a certain country can do so only if they are registered in that country. It seems logic although, this means ads can be blocked. And this may be a problem for the EU: as it seems it is only registered in Belgium, i.e. Brussels, the capital of the EU, these rules may not allow the EU to show ads in other countries than Belgium about the elections it organises and that concern itself most. Indeed, although in each country other candidates campaign to become MEP (Member of the European Parliament), the EU wants to run ads via social media throughout the EU (as it already does) to convince people of the importance to take the European elections serious and thus to vote as it concerns a decision-making power that concerns all Eu...

(7c) Rules for companies

Image
I agree with (although I didn't read the whole article): The beauty of money Staff and shareholders, and the latter include customers who can proof they buy regularly something, have a say in the salary of (top) earners at companies because when toppers play themselves too much than prices of goods and services must rise to compensate for wages and bonuses paid; Giving away shares of companies should not be possible because people who buy shares are more careful that companies behave than those who get shares for free because selling given shares are always profits while people who receive such large numbers of share they would not be able to buy themselves will one day decide to cash in and sell them so potentially large numbers of shares may float markets and can even result in decrease in the value for everyone who bought their own shares but also for those who received only a few shares from the company where they work; Employers, certainly at large companies...

(11g) Attack by John Cleese on social (and other) media

Image
The comedian John Cleese criticised social media during the promotion of a new film , I think for some good reasons while he also admitted he used them too as they have many positive advantages. I use social media to stay in contact with family and friends close by home and worldwide and I would not want to miss it anymore, even when I only use these media scarcely. That is one of the main advantages of social media: you can connect very easily with people you want to follow or publish short messages very quickly so friends and family stay informed about you. However, indeed there are excesses whereby some people misuse these media, e.g. bullying and/or spreading rumours about other people, sometimes even driving people towards committing suicide. These excesses can and should be stopped. Some people say that is not possible because there are no specific laws with regard to social media and more in general the internet. However, although I am not a lawyer, I think the exist...

(11c) Because press freedom is important, it needs to accept some limitations.

Image
This article is a continuing of my previous publication. Here I will discuss (1) why we need press freedom (it informs and thus is part of the democracy), (2) when should the press publish about things people want to hide from others (to expose illegal activities) and (3) what measures can be taken to prevent the media oversteps invisible but well-known lines so that the public continue to have respect for the media (via control and the threat of punishment). Freedom of the Press is important First of all, like many other people, I like reading newspapers and scientific magazines, much more than reading books (also because I have not much time reading books, therefore I read reviews and commentaries so I know something about newly published books) . They inform me about changes in society and the forces that try to stop these changes. I prefer reading serious newspapers such as " The Guardian " or the BBC-website because they allow the publication of different voices on ...
