(16e) Mr Tony Blair received knighthood. Many disagree

Image
Old UK PM Blair received a knighthood , even the highest honor possible in the UK, handed out by HRH Queen Elisabeth II. I think he deserves it for his premiership and he should have received it earlier. However, I don't think he should receive this honor all these years after his premiership because during those years he made bad decisions such as being adviser for questionable regimes to say it mildly, such as to the regime of  Kazakhstan . Although some British defend the honor  that is given to Mr Blair, many more, both many journalists  and ordinary people , oppose that he is rewarded this knighthood, an opposition mainly for his involvement in the second US-Iraq war, better known as Gulf war of which I still remember the discussions; but also because he forgot his roots and joined the rich. PM Blair decided about wars against dictators and terrorists while people claim he did it for the fossil fuels, and not to get rid of monsters, during which British soldiers di...

(12x) The past weeks: Climate change, religious violence and their relationship

A summary of the period from Saturday, 21/12/2019 till Monday, 06/01/2020. It concerns huge Australian fires due to climate change and growing influence of religions and their wars. Some comments were already published on Facebook, others are modified and some are new, certainly those from the last days. Here a short summary, further down in reversed order comments to events. Australia's PM gave a religious speech before going on holiday but was forced to return early as Australians became furious he enjoyed life while large groups of Australians suffered. Although Europe asks other countries to invest in renewables, it continues to invest money in gas so it becomes even more dependent from Russia. Australia continues to defend its coal industry. While the change in the climate and its consequences cost society fortunes, Everywhere there are battles not only between but also within religions. And although certain leaders still think the future lays in the past, scientists ...

(16d) Chilcot report and PM Blair

The Chilcot report is severe for Mr Blair about his decision to go to war against Saddam Hussein to destroy his WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) and topple the regime. The report says many errors were made, and certainly the unpreparedness of the post-war period was unacceptable. Still, I think PM Blair is sincere when he says he wanted to get rid of dictator Saddam Hussein and his WMD. Indeed, that dictator was pure evil, killing tens of thousands of his own people, including with the use of gas and starting wars with neighbours such as Iran and Kuwait, resulting in more than a million people killed while supporting terrorists outside his own country. In the end, people would have risen against him and this would probably have been with disastrous effects as people have done in Syria against their own mass murderer with disastrous effects. PM Blair and US President Bush Jr went to war because they claimed and still do that they wanted to destroy Saddam's WMD and liberate...

(16b) Tony Blair: His final years as PM - Foreign policies gone wrong for many people

During his final years as PM, the 'war-on-terror' started (and still continues) whereby the attacks in New York and Washington were game-changers. Before this tragedy, there were interventions in wars such as in Kosovo and Sierra Leone that were celebrated by many but now PM Blair felt the need to start war to liberate people and remove dictators whereby there was the impression lies were told to justify war and to be important and this changed the mood of the people towards him. He also started to believe that police should be able to detain people for up to 90 days without charge while I think politicians should be able to trust judges so they can see evidence and can determine the length that people are locked up. Even torture was started to be used and although I understand this evolution as politicians tried to protect the general public after the attacks on the USA (09/11/2001) but also Madrid (11/03/2004 in which 191 people died) and London (07/07/2005 in which 52 peo...

Isis - a threat

Finally, there have been a few air strikes using drones by the Americans on Isis rebels while Europe, close by, looked and approved. As a result, thousands of people who were stuck on a mountain were saved . But, because of the strikes an American journalist was beheaded and thus we continue fighting Isis as we notice they are very extreme. And although Isis had to retreat in one region , around Baghdad they continue to advance . Iraqi's leaders replaced their weak and divisive PM Maliki as the West demanded (although it seems we first supported him so he could alienate a large proportion of his people and as a result they (Sunni) started to join the enemy) because we promised help ones the Iraqi would unite. But after they replaced their PM and beg us for help, we hesitate because we don't want to become involved again in another war in Iraq although helping one specific population may create even more tensions. But, we should realise the situation is differently as now Ir...

Troubles in a number of countries

Syria I recently saw a reportage about Syria and the fighting that is going on there. How is happening that one day there will be a ruler in that country who is no longer accepted by many of his people and thus people will fight against him because he refuses to leave. In the end, he will only be remembered as the person who tried to remain in power for as long as possible and as a result the city Damascus (and cities across the country), thousands of years old and one of the oldest, if not the oldest, continuously inhabited city in the world, may be completely destroyed , similarly to what happened before during the war in Lebanon. Indeed, already historical parts of cities are gone during attacks from the army while rebels are blowing up parts of the city to undermine the army. If only Assad would accept to leave the country, the destruction of the country could stop and some of his and his family's achievements may remain. Idle hope as he was again elected as president . On...
