Spain's latest election show there is hope for the future

Published on FB 21/07/2023, days before the Spanish elections

Maria Guardiola said she only had her word, but later she said "on reflection, "my word isn't as important as the future of the people of Extremadura”." Her original words were delivered in a speech in which she tore into the far-right Vox party for its denial of gender-based violence, its demonisation of migrants and its attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. Remember the Bible where the devil tells Jesus on top of a hill "bow for me, and I give you power over all that you see".

But people are not surprise as her party's leader cannot keep his own words such as when he said that the largest party should lead the government, and that was another party. And thus he forced her to change her words. And she agreed, instead of holding on to what she believed, so now she can lead the government.

And thus slowly Europe may move in the direction of extreme right that is anti-woke as they want the right to insult people. That denies climate change while it was never as hot, dry or wet as today. That defends old Christian values, and is selective in what to accept from science. A Europe few people want.

Spain. Important holiday destination because of friendly people, great cultural heritage and good food, even for vegetarians, while it is also an important economy that trades with the rest of the world.

The outcome of the Spanish elections gives hope for the future

The outcome of the Spanish elections surprised many as the rightwing Partido Popular (PP) won, but with fewer votes than election polls predicted. In addition, the extreme right Vox ended smaller than people expected, so a coalition between both doesn't result in a majority.

In contrast, the current ruling Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) gained one seat compared with the previous elections, while serious losses were predicted. However, their coalition party lost, so a new majority between only these two parties is no longer possible.

Now the leader of PP demands the right to try to form a government of the right as his party became the largest political party.

A hopeful future - not one of hate - but not yet
This result should not completely surprise. Indeed, the current generation of people know diversity, and many like it. An example is the town Naquera where Vox, together with the PP, formed the local government, and tried to ban any evidence of LGBTQ+ people by removing LGBTQ+ flags from official buildings. But, many people didn't agree.

Another example: the mayor of Villanueva de Algaidas wanted to fly the rainbow flag to mark international LGBTQ+ Pride month. But, after years of support for a diverse society, three miserable persons complained and he had to take down the flags. One person refused to bow and offered free LGBTQ+ flags to anyone who wanted one, and so he distributed around 400 flags, because in today's society, people no longer accept that LGBTQ+, women, and others have they human rights violated.

Such actions of removing symbols of inclusion bring fear to many as they themselves are LGBTQ+, or their children or friends are, or they know LGBTQ+ people from the media such as journalists or artists, and at work. And people see they are not threatening. That is why it is important to be "out": to show people that LGBTQs are not a threat. Instead, people who oppose human rights are a danger as they violate other peoples rights. Certainly when they think Franco, a murderous dictator, was a good leader.

It is not only LGBTQs, Vox also posted a campaign poster against women empowerment (and that includes that women shouldn't complain when they are raped and can't stop the resulting pregnancy as Vox is against abortion); the left (even when they campaign for better working conditions for ordinary workers); the squatters movement. Only after a complain by the socialists who felt targeted, the poster had to be removed.

Thus, people voted milder than opinion polls predicted, although part of society remains ancient and think that discrimination, or a ban on certain people, is something positive. Of course it is not. Slowly societies arise where people recognise good from evil. Remember, Adam and Eve eat from the apple that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad (Gen. 2, 15-17), not from the apple of knowledge. So, people no longer need to rely on old books to know right from wrong, and thus people can condemn those who claim old books as their guidance to justify discrimination.

But, it is not only LGBTQ+ and women rights. What is remarkable is that since many years, migrants continue to arrive from Africa, still a large section of Spanish society doesn't agree with Vox and therefore voted more to the left, although the PP is not much less extreme. Those voters are not only younger people. Many people understand that the current problems in Spain are not due to migrants, but the result of the financial crisis that nearly bankrupted the country and impoverished many Spanish. But, I also understand why people, including LGBTQ+ and women, oppose more migrants as some migrants agree with those on the extreme right that straight men should have more rights than others, and thus people feel threatened to be themselves openly in public.

Later the Covid-19 crisis hit Spain's economy. These crises also had an effect on the rest of Europe of whom many now complain holiday destinations became too expensive, certainly after Russia invaded Ukraine that resulted in strong rise of energy and food prices, and thus inflation.

Add to this the biggest crisis, a crisis that is part of the reason for the large migration towards Europe: the climate change and environmental crises that destroys crops and animals, while when it is too warm, people become more aggressive. In addition, the economy in many countries remain bad with high unemployment and low wages for most people with jobs. And thus people look elsewhere for a better future, and both Europe and North America have well-paid jobs.

Still, Vox hopes to profit from them, although denies the climate change and environmental crises. But, as mentioned higher, the PP is not much better than Vox.

Still, the climate change crisis is not limited to only tropical countries as it hits already Europe with droughts, fires and extreme storms. Also other parts of the world experience extreme weather, it is all in the news. Some people even mention the apocalypse such as in Hawaii but also elsewhere, and certainly when more disasters strike more people may speak in religious terminology such as revelations. For religious people, many think the crises will be a god's gift as more people may return to their religion. But, having those religious extremists in power may rather be an even bigger disaster for many when you hear and read about their hate speeches towards LGBTQ+, migrants and people with darker skin colour, and those who have a different opinion; even women should know their position in society, although certain women join the haters.

Still, as I mentioned higher, the move to right and extreme right was smaller than expected as many people understand their solutions are more often than not no solutions. That doesn't mean that at a certain moment the more extreme right may not win when normal solutions by moderate political parties don't seem to work, and people are fed-up with more migrants, and more extreme protests by climate and environmental activists when they disturb traffic because they fear the climate change and environmental crises are not taken seriously enough. However, not taking it seriously enough will likely cost more than investments in new energy forms. Look at the devastation after the storm Daniel passed over Libya and the large amount of water destroyed two dams, with major destruction and possible tens of thousands who died. Still, politicians on the more extreme right, but even left, may still gain votes when they claim that the old industries are the solution against extreme prices, while climate change is more likely to be directly responsible for price increases such as those of food. Also war such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine is directly responsible for high prices and goods shortages, while the extremes on both sides seem to suggest Ukraine should give in.
