(15c) Mr Obama and (dis)trust in governments

Image
Indeed, governments should aim that people trust them to avoid anger. For me, the way to do this is not by blocking contend on the internet but via openness by governments whereby they should respond to misinformation while the information they publish can then be checked by professionals and the general public, including opponents. Of course, hateful messages that aim to hurt people should be blocked but with an explanation why. And thus, blaming Russia for the victories of Mr Trump or Brexit is (I think) rubbish because there was sufficient information on the internet and media and via direct contact between people with discussions amongst politicians, experts and the general public so most people were sufficiently informed to vote as they did; this is confirmed by the fact that opinion on these (and other) matters changes only little. Only when access to information is blocked is it understandable that people think as their leaders indoctrinate them to do as they don't have oth...

(14f) Growth of cities into megacities

Image
Cities are most likely the way forward with a growing number of very large cities although these megacities will be mainly located outside the USA and Europe, if migration slows down. These cities develop because people can find jobs and socialise. But, in order to remain viable, I think clean energy by the use of renewables, including electric cars, as well as waste water that is cleaned so it can be used again as drinkable water or to clean toilets is the way forward. At the same time, nature between cities should be allowed to recover so plants and animals can return. A series about the development of cities into possible future megacities , such as Lagos that grew from unknown to one of the largest cities in the world while some predict it may further grow to a population close to 100 million people. Still, I don't think this will happen soon although I may be called a racist for this. In Africa, people quickly fight with each other over resources, even when plenty are avai...

(17f) Gun lobby sinks deep after last school schooting

Image
How low can you sink as a human when those who sell guns ridicule the victims of a shooting massacre at a school? And it's not only the weapon lobby, also certain politicians call opponents who want stricter gun laws " leftists who create the crisis " and thus are America's bad side. Still, I also believe many are really convinced that the solution in a country packed with weapons are "more guns but for the good guys" to stop more massacres. Also President Trump stunt allies as he seemed to agree that stricter gun laws are necessary and thus had a topic to unite with the Democrats although this creates opposition by majority of his own parties (and thus, whoever is in power has either extreme followers and extreme opponents). Still, later he seemed to have changed his mind after he discussed the issue with the weapon lobby. Another group of politicians are the opportunists, those who think they can win elections by being supportive of the second ...

Trump's mental health discussion

Image
People discuss President Trump's mental health and his fitness for the presidential office. Of course, people should be able to do so. Still, the way some people discuss this suggest some have their own problems. Concerning certain issues I'm even on President Trump's side and don't support his opponents although now they may also question my mental health. For instance, in my opinion the President was right to bomb Syria after President Assad's gas attack as he crossed a red line that was set by President Obama but never enforced. He's right to warn North Korea and to involve China and the UN to stop its further development of nuclear weapons. And his method seems to work as it resulted in more sanctions after which North Korea pretends it is prepared to talk with South Korea and now joins its neighbour for the Olympic Winter Games but it seems without any conditions, something I find unacceptable. On other issues I disagree with the President such as...

Green versus Red versus Blue, exit Yellow

Image
As elsewhere, Antwerp's socialists (Red) and environmentalists (Green) don't seem to be natural partners to work together. I think liberals (Blue) and Green are much closer ideologically as both are in favour of entrepreneurship and freedom to express yourself but they don't recognise this because I think the Blue are too much attached to the past to recognise in full the potential of the new economies such as clean energy although they too recognise the digital possibilities. In Antwerp a collaboration between the socialists (Red) and environmentalists (Green) collapsed . The main reason is that a socialist candidate seems to have used accounting tricks and this became public as should be in good democracies so people know what they may expect from politicians they have to elect although the Red seem to disagree as they defended their candidate; also in the past they had members who were creative. And thus the Green no longer want the Red as partner during coming el...

Soviet Union - Communism we don't want

Image
Some people think Stalin's Russia can be used as example against our own society. I don't agree and two discussions on the Flemish radio explained well how certain people in Russia (but also in other countries) think positively about communist Soviet Union because they selectively use its history against greed in our capitalist society. It is good that people want a better society but they should use better examples than the Soviet Union if they want that people take them serious. I believe in a social democracy that helps people who need help while the wealthy can pay for themselves and whereby taxes should be as low as possible and sometimes selective but everyone needs to pay them according what they earn and the wealthy are proud to show their wealth by contributing to a healthy society via paying their taxes instead of escaping to financial paradises. Still, people who invest their own money in companies should not be punished by having to pay taxes. Below I explain wha...

(5j) Globalisation, a blessing if not done for selfish reasons

Globalisation, it seems now even some diehards are starting to question it . I still think it is the way forward when well-regulated but that's the problem as the remaining diehards claim it should be even more deregulated to open up markets and stimulate the economy. Globalisation has become that companies are allowed to produce products in poor countries where people are paid too little for the work they do although slightly more than what others in the region earn to attract the best after which companies sell the products in rich countries (mainly the Western world) at prices below the price what should be paid if the same products were produced in wealthy countries where wages are higher. The result : the outsourcing means that people lose jobs in countries where wages are high and thus become poorer while in the developing countries people who work at multinationals improve compared with those without a job at multinationals so local producers can't compete with t...
