(12ab) International solidarity to tackle climate change

Image
How I think the world community can help each other to create a better world that is affordable and benefits everyone. For instance, when climate change hits a region or country, other regions and countries that are not hit can help with contribution of food and drinks, showing that respect for farmers and their work is important. In summary, solidarity is important in times of crises. But first why I defend Greta Thunberg's speech at the UN and afterwards. Indeed, over the past weeks (see here and here ) and even years ago I wrote, after reading climate scientists' warnings, we should take climate change serious and act to prevent the worse possible scenarios. It may not only concern loss of ice at the arctics and glaciers and thus rising sea levels (as Venice, Italy  and Jakarta, Indonesia experiences) or fires due to extreme hot and dry weather (as Australia  and Russia experiences) but may even result in a different distribution of weights in the world and as a res...

Animal conservation

Image
Everywhere in the worlds animals are on the brink of extinction. Indeed, animals in the wild killed for ivory while lions and giraffes are not even safe in zoos. And when animal numbers recover, humans complain and say we need to kill them. I've warned before against blaming animals for the destruction of the environment and climate change or we start to reduce their numbers - now your own species. And thus now there is a discussion about whether deer  need to be killed and more specifically about the numbers of animals that should be killed. But did they study other ways? Here some suggestions: Deer in Richmond Park, located in the middle of London, UK Maybe relocate them to other parts of Europe where they went (almost) extinct? Maybe reintroduce wolfs. Of course, not large numbers but sufficient so they can hunt the deer without being a treat to humans. Maybe castrate a number of male deer so they can live without multiplying. Maybe replant trees in enclo...

Coexistence of humans and animals

Image
A document has been signed by many public figures in which they call to stop the import of anytrophies from trophy hunters , certainly when they kill endangered animals. I agree, those wealthy trophy hunters should not abuse the fact that many countries where these animals live are poor and need money (sometimes for the pockets of corrupt politicians). But I think it should go further whereby trophy hunters should know that they can't return to their own country after their hunt because upon arrival in their own country they will be arrested on charges that they are partly to blame for the extinction of animal species, even when they're royal. Relation developed versus developing countries But I realise we should not condemn countries where endangered but also potentially extremely dangerous animals live such as lions and tigers, elephants and rhinos when they decide the animal population became too large, certainly in the face of their growing population. The Nethe...

End of lions

Image
A zoo, completely loosing its mind. First, it killed a giraffe that was born in the zoo and showed children that killing is only a game and part of life and thus can be done for fun and education. Now, the same zoo killed four (4 !!!) lions , one beautiful male and his female with their two 10-month old cubs so they can be replaced with one (1) male lion. All this was done for science to prevent future inbreeding but also to prevent that the new male lion would kill the male cub (how science can give itself a bad name when some scientists show so little feelings for other animals while one would expect a zoo understands more than anyone else that even animals like to live by having studied them) . How the animals looked like a happy and proud family . It seems that now at least the zoo tried to find another place to house the animals but failed while it seems they may already have learned from their past mistake by not showing children how animals (who trust their owners) are killed ...

End of a giraffe and conservation

Image
Marius, the Giraffe Over the weekend, a beautiful 18-month old male animal has been killed in Denmark: Marius the giraffe . The zoo where the animal was born explained why: to avoid inbreeding. Other zoos offered to take the animal to save its life but the zoo refused their offer, arguing it would still risk future inbreeding as the animal's genes are already widespread among other giraffes in European zoos. And a second may follow his fate . I don't agree and will argue why. Thus, it seems that we have reached a point that, after some conservationist groups , also zoos think they have to kill animals to preserve them. Because, in order to preserve animals, zoos exchange animals for breeding. As a result, almost all species involved in breeding schemes in zoos will probably be related with each other. And thus these schemes may result in more animals being killed to avoid inbreeding until happens what is happening in the wild: only a few if any may be left. B...

Ivory and Rhinos

Image
I think desperation, and thus loss of reason, is starting to descend upon humanity as I will show with following two recent examples. Ivory Recently, the world celebrated that China destroyed 6.2 tons of illegal ivory , the result of about 700 slaughtered elephants while months before the US destroyed 6 tons. Even nature conservative groups such as the African Wildlife Foundation and International Fund for Animal Welfare were celebrating the destruction (although some environmentalists were not) because indeed it can show the Chinese people that very large amounts of animals need to be killed for some ivory. But, although I may be wrong, to me, the celebration by these organisations of the destruction of illegal ivory shows their desperation while these animals were killed for nothing. I don't celebrate when an ivory-hungry country destroys tons of illegal ivory so it gets praise from the international community. Indeed, this will result in fewer ivory on the markets, certai...

The veins of a leaf

Image
Look at the beauty of the skeleton of this leaf which I found today in my garden, at the end of the winter. Life is returning back to my garden and now many leafs that are left after the winter will disappear soon as insects start eating them. During the winter they were a good protection against frost for many insects such as woodlouse. But also snails and worms consume many of these leafs, certainly now when the only food available are old leafs. First the soft parts of the leafs disappear, leaving these beautiful but fragile skeletons. Thus, hurry if you too want to take some pictures of the skeleton of leafs before most are gone. A scanner is ideal for taking this kind of pictures. Skeleton of the leaf of a rose. Soon fresh leafs will appear and then, probably just as last year, the battle with snails and slugs eating my plants will start all over again. Update 12/11/2013: another leave to share. As I find this too a beautiful leaf, although not yet completely digest...
