(3f) De Drie Machten moeten elkaar kunnen beoordelen

Image
See here for English.

(3f) The Three Powers must be able to judge each other

Image
Introduction  A Slovakian man  was taken from an airplane by police just before departure, he resisted, among other by hitting his head against a wall until he bled, so the police had to use force to keep the person under control.  Afterwards the person died.  A video of the event became public 2,5 years after the event happened.  Questions must be answered.  The video also shows how a policewoman delivers the Hitler salute.  Doesn't that justify at least an immediate layoff and even a dismissal since Nazis have no place in the police? Questions that need to be answered  Why was the man aggressive or did he become violent when he was removed from the plane?  Did the officers misbehave or should it be better described what to do if someone opposes aggressively?  Indeed, sometimes people die and this needs to be investigated, especially if there were video footage although apparently those in higher positions were not aware of this as the ...

(17g) Celebrated violence will result in violence

Image
Violence in games, films and music So true I think, when President Trump claims that violent video games but I also include extremely violent movies and music that worship violence are partly to blame for gun violence in the USA's society, together with gun ownership. More generally, they promote alpha male behaviour, also by women. When violence (and sexual exploitation) earns you points and money while actors who play in violent movies are worshipped as heroes and this is now even available to always younger people than violent solutions to problems can be expected. When people and certainly children from an early age onwards get used to violence than they may use it one day, certainly when you have movies in which "the good guys and girls kill the bad guys and girls" and when politicians repeat the slogan of the National Rifle Association (NRA) that a good person such as teachers carry guns to kill the bad persons with guns. But how to know when someone is a good ...

(10d) Thalidomide - And the apology that angered its victims

Image
Thalidomide (tradename Softenon), a drug known all over the world for the terrible birth defects it caused including shortened arms and legs ( the best known side effect as this is very visi ble, see figure , taken, then slightly edited, from Langman's medische embryologie, 10de herziene druk by T.W. Sadler ) , blindness, deafness, heart problems and brain damage while many children died because of the drug. I write this article in response to an article published on the BBC-website . Extreme example of limb deformities. Thalidomide was invented in 1953 by the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal. The drug was launched by the company in 1957 . By 1961 , the Australian doctor William McBride reported that an increased number of deformed babies were born at his hospital to mothers who had taken thalidomide; the same year , Softenon was taken from the market . Now, almost 50 years later the company Grünenthal finally apologised for the problems the drug they inv...
