Brexit, refugee crisis and the EU

Image
Brexit and the EU and possible troubled future relationship Simon Jenkins is reasoning that PM Johnson may have to give in to the EU as he thinks that the UK's fishing industry depends on the EU to survive. However, EU consumers will be angry when fish becomes scares and expensive after EU fishers are no longer allowed to fish in British waters; indeed, the UK's own fish export may even increase. Or the UK may export its fish to the rest of the world. Similar to other farming exports such as lam of which a large part is exported to the EU. Further, he writes [Quote] "It may be that one day the EU’s economy so collapses that it really is worth Britain’s while to turn away and seek better deals elsewhere. There is not the remotest sign of that at present." Really? Does he not read newspapers or watch news programs? Look to the border between Greece and Turkey. Turkey opened its borders with Greece because it's angry the EU (very likely) doesn't keep it...

(13f) Love letter by Mr Timmermans to Britain

Image
Mr Frans Timmermans, executive vice-president of the European Commission, wrote a letter which he calls a love letter as a response to the UK that may be leaving the EU soon, the so-called Brexit. In his letter he tells the British that they are more than welcome to return may they decide to do so. Of course, after Brexit is completed, the British can return if they wish. But, I think, first Brexit has to be completed and the sooner the better so relations can return to normal and the UK may consider to rejoin. Or not. Organisation of referendum First, in the fifth paragraph of the letter Mr Timmermans mentions although not by name that David Cameron made a wrong decision when he organised the EU referendum. I don't agree; even the LibDems who were in the coalition with the Tories didn't block the referendum as they could have done by leaving the government. I accept many politicians may have thought that organising the referendum would have silenced the leavers whi...

Germany and UK in the clinch with the EU in the background

PM Johnson spoke with PM Merkel of Germany . He says she told him that his new proposals are unacceptable. Officials deny she said it this way but, as she doesn't make public what was said, she said it. President Tusk is angry that this may destroy the EU. He should know that Brexiters don't mind and many even hope for the end of the EU. Before the referendum Mr Johnson said the EU wants to become a superstate under one authority, just as Hitler did (it also shows how Brexiters speak about the poor while Remainers are in general in favour of austerity). Now he claims that Germany said that Germany has the right to leave the EU but the UK cannot in its entirety because of Northern Ireland. Indeed, as if Germany refuses the UK its right to leave under Article 50. But, we should not forget that Northern Ireland is part of the UK, not part of Ireland nor the EU as the EU is an organisation that unites countries on a voluntarily basis and thus, as long as the UK exists as i...

Unite to remain - Impossible?

Image
A  the Guardian article that hopes British will unite behind Labour to stop Brexit. First, I think that will not heal society and second, I think the article doesn't do an effort to convince Brexiters it is better to stay inside the EU while instead it confirms the EU is bad. Brexiters spread lies while remainers should not confirm them or the EU remains the bad one and a next referendum is again lost. Stop confirming stories such as the EU wants to starve the British from food and medicines or visas will be needed to visit the EU because the EU also needs trade with the UK; if these stories will be right it is stupid while the UK can still trade with America and others. Start explaining the good of the EU such as workers rights and environmental protection while we know powerful eurosceptics hate the EU because the EU tries to protect ordinary people against powerful multinationals, investment bankers and their politicians who want more profits and this supported by a tablo...

(11l) Rules to prevent that elections are influenced by unknows

Nick Clegg, criticised by the EU because, as an senior employee of Facebook (FB), he helped FB to create rules to prevent foreign interference in (EU) elections . The rule: companies that want to run advertisements (in short: ads) on FB (to influence elections) in a certain country can do so only if they are registered in that country. It seems logic although, this means ads can be blocked. And this may be a problem for the EU: as it seems it is only registered in Belgium, i.e. Brussels, the capital of the EU, these rules may not allow the EU to show ads in other countries than Belgium about the elections it organises and that concern itself most. Indeed, although in each country other candidates campaign to become MEP (Member of the European Parliament), the EU wants to run ads via social media throughout the EU (as it already does) to convince people of the importance to take the European elections serious and thus to vote as it concerns a decision-making power that concerns all Eu...

(13e) Brexit and far right

Grayling claim Brexit block could boost far right is 'gutter politics' I think minister Grayling is right when he says that blocking Brexit could boost extreme right. But, I think the opposite can have the same result. Brexiters Imagine people waited 40 years before the 2nd referendum about Europe was organised (the 1st was when people agreed to join the EU) and then their vote will be ignored, whether via a 3rd referendum (still the possibility people vote out) or because UK's government decide to stay (this is possible until the 2 year transition period is over or longer in case that period is extended). Or maybe the EU offers the highest position to a British politician in return that the UK remains part of the EU. Such a politician may be old PM Tony Blair, admired in the EU as we recognise him as a good PM that resulted in UK's golden age after PM Thatcher's time. But, he's hated by a large section of the British public who claim this is because he remo...

(13d) Anti Brexit march, a huge success

Image
One million join march against Brexit as Tories plan to oust May Reality Very understandable, one million people march against Brexit because they are afraid of what may be a future outside the EU. Yes, I too would have voted against leaving the EU as its formation brought not only peace but also prosperity to all countries that joined. Still, often the EU did as the UK requested (such as no euro, no Schengen and even British police who is allowed to check people in Belgium and France who want to travel to the UK, English as main language, a neoliberalism and even when the UK are leaving the EU, the EU still follows UK's lead of enforcing austerity on one of its members just as the UK enforces it on its own people), and yet a large section of (mainly) the English remain angry that the UK joined the EU and blames the EU for what the UK does in the UK. And thus, now a large section of British society shows they want to remain. No further comments Theory And thus, y...

(13c) NATO contributions and President de Gaulle

European countries NATO contribution On Saturday I heard the start of a radio discussion. It was about the US that agreed after WWII to look after Europe's security (and founded the NATO whereby the UK as co-founder was the second largest contributor after the USA). But, already short after the end of WWII the USA complained that Europe contributed too little financially towards its own protection while it was one of the main critics of the USA's policies. Just as President Obama was not very happy with Europe'scontribution , now President Trump says it's enough and Europe must contribute more or lose its protection, one of the reasons why many Europeans hate President Trump as this policy will cost money. But, as before, Europe remains the USA's largest critic, even when Europe was the origin of the most evil periods in human history. Compare this with the US's civil war in which people died because Americans fought to abolish slavery. President de Gaull...

(13b) Extended period of Brexit negotiations

EU on no-deal Brexit motion: ' like Titanic voting for iceberg to move '. Many pro-EU British will celebrate that the negotiations can continue and that, according the British parliament, the UK can't leave the EU without a deal. However, they should not think that the British Empire still ruled and can set its conditions. Indeed, the article describes this. Also MEP Guy Verhofstadt is opposed to a period too long after 28/03/2019 because, without any directions what the UK wants, is such an extended negotiation period worthless and creates it only uncertainty for everyone and thus chaos. As he said, if only all UK noises would agree to point in the same directions, a good deal, both for the EU and UK could have been negotiating. Now there may be nothing left than anger and frustration. For instance, the European Medicine Agency (EMA) moved to Amsterdam. As long as the Brexit is not final, who will pay the rent of its previous headquarters in London? In case th...

(13a) Europe and its not always friendly neighbours

Unfortunately but true what's written in this article . There are certain elements in society who want the failure of the EU. One of them is the religious right in America such as the Tea Party who think the EU is evil while they don't understand the evil in their own thinking. And these elements sicken society as they repeat again and again their own truth in their own media and social media. And indeed, the EU's reaction to save Greece after the financial sector targeted it was not a hopeful sign. The EU, founded after a terrible war to unite people and prevent another catastrophe. And thus now it seems the EU is surrounded by countries which leaders don't like the EU very much such as - Russia (Europe celebrated the collapse of the Soviet union but now fears its own collapse), - Turkey (that is sick that the EU lectures it while refuses to honour its promise that it can join the EU), - the US (many are tired that Europeans look down on them and their values while the...

(13) UK's referendum about its EU membership

Cameron did not think EU referendum would happen, says Tusk (see more in the Guardian article). https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jan/21/donald-tusk-warned-david-cameron-about-stupid-eu-referendum-bbc?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Blogger Whether then PM David Cameron or someone else, the referendum would have happened one day as after 40 year membership the discussions continued to divide the country and weakened Europe. But then President Hollande's comment: " This would not be the first time that a commitment made at an election had not been kept afterwards, but he wanted to show he could negotiate successfully with Europeans .” Such a comment at the start of his sentence illustrates why the public no longer trust politicians and show little respect. And thus, yes, PM Cameron did as he promised. But indeed, as the second part shows, threatening with a referendum in the hope it will force changes in the EU that favour the UK is not how to negotiate, certainly not when the...

(19b) Article Brexit countryside UK and PM Thatcher's legacy

Image
This Guardian article should be read by anyone who hopes a new referendum will be organised but doesn't acknowledge why people voted to leave. Those who think such a referendum will keep the UK inside the EU and solve all problems should not hope before its result is known. Even then is the question, can it return? This quote summarises it: "I would vote to leave now because the way the EU has treated the UK on its exit has opened my eyes up a little bit. I've seen what they have been doing to other countries, particular Greece." Here my analysis why I think many, mainly English, voted to leave the EU. Indeed, someone in the article blames PM Thatcher and yes, even today many British politicians, often Thatcherites, continue the destruction of the social cohesion in their own country. And thus it is not the EU who should be blamed that even slowed down this destruction by introducing workers and environmental protection. Still, many voted for the Tories who...

(19a) Foreign Brexiters

Image
I completely agree that people who live outside the country where they were born should not be able to interfere with decisions made in the country where they no longer live although during a short period such as a one election period (in general every 4 or 5 years) after they left they may still be able to vote as they still understand to some extend what's going on in the country where they no longer live. Because, as they don't live in the country they are unlikely to feel the consequences of the outcome of an election or referendum while the citizens may feel the result of the vote from people living elsewhere. Local and foreign voters can be like water and fire on certain issues Me for instance voted during Belgian elections while I was living in London (I understood I must vote as in Belgium papa government doesn't believe its citizens are intelligent enough to decide whether they should vote or not and thus people are forced to vote),even when I didn't...

(15d) Previous USA President Obama gave advise

Image
Former USA President Barack Obama hit the hammer on the nail when he spoke at a Democrats fundraiser event . Democrats should stop mourning the loss of the presidential elections 2016 and start to say what they may do when in power. Analyse why then Mr and now President Donald Trump won the elections and find solutions that are better and include almost everyone in society. Otherwise, those " who are " today will be those " who were " tomorrow as the recent N.Y. democratic elections demonstrated when the main candidate lost from an inexperienced "socialist" Democrat . Still, whatever solution, some people will have none of them except the most extreme. Therefore, politicians should stop to listen to and talk with almost exclusively only (multi)millionaires and billionaires to hear their solutions, i.e. more tax reductions for the rich to stimulate the economy and more penalties for those who don't work, including seriously ill people . Those wealt...

Theresa May calls for immigration based on skills and wealth

PM May's plan to allow immigration based on skills and wealth was to be expected . After the two golden decades that started under PM Major and continued under PM Blair, the decline continues. Under these two PMs, people from poorer areas were stimulated to follow higher education and to achieve this major investments were done in education in general, including new schools. Also major investments at universities resulted in collaborations with overseas universities, many foreigners (including from poorer countries) moving to the UK and top research. Also free healthcare via the NHS whereby major investments resulted in good equipped (new) hospitals, good healthcare professionals and reduced waiting times. Also a house for everyone was promoted and thus people could buy a property, improve it and sell it naturally more expensive to buy a larger house and repeat the above. This resulted in more expensive and now difficult to buy properties, certainly when houses and flats were s...
