A plan as a result of fear for rising sea levels
Some engineers consider that two dams should be built to protect millions of people in the Netherlands, Belgium, Scotland and England at a cost of 250 to 500 billion £. The proposal comes from the Netherlands because after having sold their gas, now the country fears part of it may disappear below the sea due to climate change. I think that taking climate change actions to prevent or at least slowdown climate change happens are probably much cheaper although less spectacular but at least the result will be clean air, ground and water. Further, huge pumps will be needed to remove the large volumes of water that rivers empty in what will eventually become a freshwater lake. Thus, the result will be a rising sea level of the ocean and a low freshwater sea so we only need to wait for the moment one or both dams break so a huge tsunami destroys the whole area. Not to mention the closing of what is now the busiest sea for transport over sea.Maybe we should consider flooding old coal mines and gas fields with seawater. Is this possible or may the mine collapse? Is this wanted as the mine will be lost for future generations while it may contain undiscovered fossils yet? Maybe salt may crystallize out the water to become fresh groundwater? Or will it result in salty groundwater as it flows to surrounding groundwater reserves so first we need to remove the salt before pumping it in the underground?
Is the sea controllable? |
But again, it shows the urgency to act to showdown climate change so we have time to slowly reduce the numbers of people in a natural way via birth control at a similar speed as the sea takes land.
Effects of climate change and rising sea levels become visible in Europe
Also lower areas in Europe start to feel the consequences of rising sea levels such as in Spain. And thus we may have to start to accept that these and other lower areas will disappear below the sea. Allow it to happen in a controlled way so people can be moved to other areas or changes to our architecture may allow people to stay in those areas while this may create new unique biodiverse areas. In UK's towns and cities people complain that no flood defences are being built to protect against flooding; but what to do when too much rains falls in a very short time?
And as a sequel to my previous post, the article shows that pumps can stop working so I'm not sure that dams to keep the sea level of the North Sea low compared with the surrounding ocean are the solution (i.e., what if the dams may break? I fear a warning system will be too slow to warn everyone).
Realistic example to combat climate change
Instead of building dams in seas to try to stop that areas are flooded due to rising sea level, I believe more in taking actions that result in clean air, water and ground and thus benefit us all. One of them is to design modern houses and cities in harmony with the sea.In Germany a project with a hydrogen train shows a clean economy is possible as it can even move a train, something I didn't expect to be possible yet. First, it can replace very polluting diesel trains but gradually, if successful, these trains may begin to replace trains powered via electric lines and thus these trains can result in more beautiful landscapes and cityscapes, unspoiled with electricity cables.
Steam trains are no longer acceptable as better and cleaner trains exist |
It shows, believe that something is possible and people will try to make it work. But, don't believe something is possible and it can't happen. Of course, certain projects may not be the best. However, I believe a clean and sustainable economy is possible. Who else believes it is? Only the voices of the masses will be able to convince politicians that change is wanted.
