Joe Biden versus Bernie Sanders debate

Image
What's the different between Mr Biden and Mr Sanders? Little as you could have heard in the first video in this article (no longer available) and the other two videos and in  this video that summarised the highlights: both want actions concerning climate change, healthcare for everyone, education, more just migration, gun control, ... . However, it is clear that Mr Biden is more for a pragmatic approach to change the system because, yes, most of Mr Sanders's proposals will not make it in Congress when the wealthy or their confidences have to agree on them because they would simply disagree because of the person. But, what with Mr Biden's proposals? Did he not experience when he was vice president under President Obama that little could be achieved because President Obama's proposals were considered too extreme? Although, there is a difference: President Obama is black while Mr Biden is white. And thus, maybe he may convince the wealthy elite that universal healthcar...

Letter to the Presidents of the USA and China

Image
China and America acting not very statesmanlike by blaming each other for the coronavirus Covid-19. President Xi of China , there is nothing to be ashamed about, illnesses can originate everywhere with exactly the same outcome: at the start the infection rate is too small to notice until it hits sufficient numbers of people. Inform your people about this and about your adequate response of quarantining regions and even the country so new cases dropped to nearly zero. Indeed, also other countries are hit hard. But, tell your diplomats to stop telling Chinese citizens that the virus was imported by the USA army (unless you show us evidence) as that may result in hate towards Americans. President Trump of the USA , stop listening to people who tell you your response was inadequate and too late as you acted earlier than many European countries that were forced to act after you closed your country's borders which is now followed by Europe. Anyone in power would be powerless aga...

How not helping people brings extreme right into power. Or their polities are used to solve crises

Image
Syrians have been begging Europe for help since the start of Syria's war ten years ago. But Europeans have done little and now are using increasingly aggressive methods to convince refugees not to come to Europe. Not helping people brings the worse out of people during crises. USA Of course, President Trump is sneered at, always an easy target. This article suggests that under another president the USA may treat the Syrian war differently while President Obama proved this may not be. Indeed, President Obama should have acted against Assad after he warned him against using again chemical weapons to kill his own people, something forbidden by international law. But I understand why he didn't act as no European country wanted to help. If we had done something Russia may never have been involved and the situation less severe. President Trump acted twice, in April 2017 and again in April 2018 together with France and the UK, after more chemical attacks by Assad. These w...

Solution for ageing in Hungary - but that excludes help for refugees

Image
What is a solution against an ageing population? More children as Hungary's PM Orban thinks ? Than and because the PM's measures of giving away presents, i.e. tax exemptions to women who produce at least 4 offspring, the country's debts will increase for the next about 20 years when finally the children start to earn money and thus pay taxes until those women have 4 children. Visit of Budapest, a beautiful city, as a student when it was still behind the iron curtain Thus, the PM accepts more active people are needed and thus there is space for refugees of whom many are young and thus can work and pay taxes now that can be used to finance an ageing population. When refugees come from countries as bad as Syria there is no choice but to help, including providing safety for Syrians in their country by e.g. imposing a no-fly zone. When people come from less prosperous countries and thus indeed can be considered to be economic migrants as we have many in Europe, than we ...

Fantastic Beasts - A no-free world is preferable?

Image
During the weekend I watched the two movies "Fantastic Beasts" that describe the years before Harry Potter was born. The movies  It certainly is not about inclusion of people who are different. Yes, the main character tells everyone to love animals, even when they look scary. But the main storyline is about humanity who tells those who are different to fit in and not to behave different from the majority, to spy on those who are different and report them when they want to be themselves and thus differ from the average person. Of course, in such a society some flip to live a miserable live with a depression that may result in self harm or violence. The first part ends with the removal of any evidence of the existence of those who are different, even when it are good memories while the aggression was because a young man was told to live a secret life and another man was angry because he no longer wanted to betray other persons who are different and that need to be punishe...

Brexit, refugee crisis and the EU

Image
Brexit and the EU and possible troubled future relationship Simon Jenkins is reasoning that PM Johnson may have to give in to the EU as he thinks that the UK's fishing industry depends on the EU to survive. However, EU consumers will be angry when fish becomes scares and expensive after EU fishers are no longer allowed to fish in British waters; indeed, the UK's own fish export may even increase. Or the UK may export its fish to the rest of the world. Similar to other farming exports such as lam of which a large part is exported to the EU. Further, he writes [Quote] "It may be that one day the EU’s economy so collapses that it really is worth Britain’s while to turn away and seek better deals elsewhere. There is not the remotest sign of that at present." Really? Does he not read newspapers or watch news programs? Look to the border between Greece and Turkey. Turkey opened its borders with Greece because it's angry the EU (very likely) doesn't keep it...
