Ivory and Rhinos

Image
I think desperation, and thus loss of reason, is starting to descend upon humanity as I will show with following two recent examples. Ivory Recently, the world celebrated that China destroyed 6.2 tons of illegal ivory , the result of about 700 slaughtered elephants while months before the US destroyed 6 tons. Even nature conservative groups such as the African Wildlife Foundation and International Fund for Animal Welfare were celebrating the destruction (although some environmentalists were not) because indeed it can show the Chinese people that very large amounts of animals need to be killed for some ivory. But, although I may be wrong, to me, the celebration by these organisations of the destruction of illegal ivory shows their desperation while these animals were killed for nothing. I don't celebrate when an ivory-hungry country destroys tons of illegal ivory so it gets praise from the international community. Indeed, this will result in fewer ivory on the markets, certai...

(12k) Less quick warming - a blessing?

New Scientist (The head is still on, 7 December 2013) describes how it seems the increase of the temperate of our planet has slowed and thus climate change deniers are celebrating because they can now claim they were right while scientists were wrong. Scientists on the other hand wonder why this happens. Together with climate change scientists, I am not so sure we should celebrate this already. Indeed, oceans are warming deeper and surface temperate is rising that may result in heavier storms as we recently experienced in the Philippines but also in Europe whereby the UK is already facing for about one month one storm after another that were so violent that parts of the UK felt in the sea at the beginning of December. Energy is used to change systems, e.g. to melt ice and thus energy used to melt the ice will have no immediate effect on the temperate. In addition, ice that melts is cold water that needs to warm, and again, warming means removing energy from the surrounding a...

(14a) Cities

Image
Recently there were some articles in New Scientist about cities including "Urban truths" (December 14, 2013) describing the hidden laws governing cities while two other articles (December 7, 2013) are more about present day and future cities including "Making sense of the city" that describes the future of "smart" cities while "A towering presence" describes what today can be achieved in designing monuments. I think many of the "hidden laws" concerning the organisation of human cities is similar with other animals that live together in large communities such as aunts where you probably also find clusters repeating themselves within the larger community around the queen. "Urban truths" describes how cities all over the world are build according to similar lay-outs while at an individual level there are big differences (kind of how we live: the more the world becomes connected, the more regions but also people increase t...
